Gifts of Writing

“A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.”

~ Ursula K Le Guin

We might imagine that only some people can be writers. They are the ones who get quoted. We see their books in libraries and shops or read their articles online and in print. But the truth is, any of us can find our voice and let words pour on to a page or a screen.

By developing the craft of writing, we strengthen our ability to speak and to be heard. We find our voice. And we learn so much about ourselves and the world through exploring life from other perspectives — whether by creating characters or simply through writing our own stories down. We see life afresh.

When we combine writing with Heart Meditation, we find that the wisdom of the spiritual heart begins to express itself in words. Over time, with dedicated practice, we drop deeper and deeper into the heart and find our writing flows with ease. It surprises us with its use of language, its rhythm and colour, its gentle wisdom and ability to heal — both for ourselves and our listeners/readers.
